PBIS - Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports

What is PBIS?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is a framework and philosophy that believes in placing emphasis on the positive choices and decisions that students are making. It is believed that the more emphasis that is placed on the positive choices that are taking place, the more positive the overall culture of a school building will be.

What is the Teaching Matrix?

The matrix was developed by a committee of principals, teachers, counselors, secretaries, and aides who worked to identify specific target areas in the building to focus on for the 2013-2014 school year. The matrix was also presented to faculty council and student council for feedback. Within each target area the committee identified specific behaviors to target with a focus on Respectful and Responsible behaviors. The committee then worked to define what Respect and Responsibility looked like in each of those areas. The matrix is not an exhaustive list but a framework to identify areas to improve. The individual classroom was purposefully left off the list so that teachers and staff have the opportunity to individually define what Respect and Responsibility look like in their own classrooms.

Rewarding Positive Behaviors

Each staff member will receive "Respectful and Responsible Trojan" slips that they may distribute to students who are making Respectful and Responsible choices throughout the school day and before or after school. Staff members are asked to please sign the slip prior to distributing it to students. Students will then place the slips in one of the grade level drawing boxes located outside the main office, library, and freshman offices. Teachers are also encouraged to find other ways to recognize positive choices within their own individual classrooms. Drawings will take place as follows:

Weekly Drawing Every Thursday: 2 students each grade level

  • Small Incentives (coupons, candy, Junior/Senior Parking Spaces, athletic tickets etc.)
Quarterly Drawing: 1 student each grade level, all slips will be saved for this drawing.
  • Larger Incentives (Gift Cards and other items)
End of the Year Drawing: All slips from the year will be accumulated for 2 Large Incentives

Thank you for your support in continuing to make FHS a great place!
